Take a guided tour into the Braes of Glenlivet to watch rutting stags in a glen near Kymah Burn, as well as roe deer, red grouse and, possibly, golden eagles. Open moorland north of the String Road offers frequent sightings, and Lochranza Golf Course is good for close views.
Red deer outnumber people on this isle by 30 to one, with roughly 6,, deer. During the rutting season, the sounds of the roaring stags echoes between the hills. A former Royal Forest, Exmoor National Park is known for its red deer, which have existed there since pre-historic times.
There are currently about 3, red deer. Also look out for Exmoor ponies, a native British pony. This National Nature Reserve is a large, open expanse with a range of species, including tree pipit and Dartford warbler.
The latter is an endangered species native to China and are part of a joint breeding programme with ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Though unequivocally less wild than the options above, at a deer park such as Richmond or Bushy Parks it is easy to photograph stags at close range among bracken-strewn woodland scenery. There are deer in Richmond, including both red and fallow deer. A lowland raised peatbog that was turned into an experimental forestry plantation and is now being slowly restored to its natural state by Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
Red deer stags rut out in the middle of the moss around mid-October. At this time of year, the stags can be seen walking alongside one another threateningly, in a behaviour called parallel walking. They will stamp the ground and roar fiercely. If two stags are of a similar size and these behaviours don't sufficiently establish a winner, they will literally 'lock antlers' and fight for dominance.
The fights are ferocious and decisive and the winner takes all. The red deer is the largest land mammal in the UK, standing at up to cm tall at shoulder height. The growth of the antlers is driven by testosterone and peaks in the early autumn when the rut starts. The deer's testosterone levels drop in the early winter and the antlers eventually drop off.
Regrowth begins again in the spring, usually bigger and better than the year before. Certain areas of the New Forest are important for the protection of red deer, and we have quiet areas for them to rest and feed. We are asking members of the public not to enter these areas, which are marked by red signs, to avoid disturbing resting deer.
Unfortunately, many people are getting unacceptably close to the deer and disturbing them while they rest during the rut.
This has dramatically affected their behaviour, with the wild herd not able to rest or move freely, they are being pushed towards nearby roads which is not safe for the animals or motorists. This is the time that male deers, known as stags or bucks, fight over females by fighting with each other or rubbing their antlers on trees.
