Who is felix dujardin

Dujardin worked with microscopic animal life, and in proposed that a new group of one-celled organisms is called Rhizopoda. In the foraminifera, he noticed an apparently formless life substance that he named Sarcode. Hugo von Mohl The word protoplasm was coined by Hugo von Mohl in order to designate certain active contents of the vegetable cell. Hint: Protoplasm is a liquid or gel-like colourless fluid that is composed of all the cell organelles, cytoplasm along with the nucleus.

He refuted naturalist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg's concept that microscopic organisms are "complete organisms" similar to higher animals. In addition to his studies of microscopic life, he did extensive research of invertebrate groups that included echinoderms, helminths and cnidarians.

In Foraminifera, he noticed an apparently formless life substance that he named "sarcode", which was later renamed protoplasm by Hugo von Mohl — In he was the first to describe the mushroom bodies, key structures in the insects' nervous system. Largely self-educated, Dujardin, who was born in Tours, France, studied geology, botany, optics, and crystallography while working variously as a hydraulics engineer, librarian, and teacher of geometry and chemistry at Tours.

In he was elected to the chair of geology and mineralogy at Toulouse, and in the following year was appointed professor of botany and zoology and dean of the Faculty of Sciences at Rennes.

As a skilled microscopist, Dujardin carried out extensive studies of the microorganisms infusoria occurring in decaying matter. These led him, in , to suggest the separation of a new group of protozoan animals, which he called the rhizopods i. He was the first to recognize and appreciate the contractile nature of the protoplasm which he termed the sarcode and also demonstrated the role of the vacuole for evacuating waste matter.

Such studies enabled Dujardin to refute the supposition, reintroduced by Christian Ehrenberg, that microorganisms have organs similar to those of the higher animals.

Dujardin also investigated the cnidarians jellyfish, sea anemones, corals, etc. Subjects: Science and technology. View all related items in Oxford Reference ».
